Dear KI family –
The Reopening Committee has been regularly monitoring the latest COVID information, including the level of community transmission in Michigan and Ingham County. After its most recent meeting, the Committee provided an updated recommendation to the Board of Directors on COVID safety precautions that provides for limited indoor eating now that eating outdoors for Kiddush is no longer practical with the colder weather.
Based on the Reopening Committee’s recommendation, the Board approved the following the updated safety precautions for Shabbat services and other indoor activities at KI:
1. All attendees need to be vaccinated and masked.
2. Singing is fine with masks.
3. Physical distancing is encouraged but not required.
4. “Mini-Kiddushes” of challah and wine can take place in the social hall after Shabbat services so long as attendees wear masks when they are not eating or drinking and maintain physical distancing. Eating snacks during indoor meetings of small groups is allowed so long as attendees follow the same precautions.
The Reopening Committee also recommended using air purifiers in the sanctuary and social hall, especially since opening windows for fresh air and ventilation during the winter may not be feasible. The Board approved that recommendation and is in the process of purchasing and installing the air purifiers.
The Reopening Committee is continuing to monitor the latest information, including vaccines for children 5 to 11 years old. The Board will be sure to let everyone know about any changes to the COVID safety precautions.
Neil Gordon, KI President
